"Southend is a small town and a chapelry in Prittlewell parish, The town stands on the thames estuary 3 1/2 miles West north West of Shoeburyness and 3 1/2 miles South by East of Rochford, 42 miles East of London. Dates from a period not earlier then 1800. Attracted notic as a suitable watering place. The town has a pier 1 1/4 miles long and has a railway on it.. The parish contains 1,165 acres. Population in 1861 was 1,716, houses 293." [Imperial Gazetteer, 1872]
